| Well heres what ive been spending my whole easter weekend on <_< A debate for Honors Rhetoric and Research... Its on the government and if it should censor the internet. Its in the Lincoln Vs. Douglas style where you use values and morals as support for your side (virtually impposiable to back up) Its due tomarrow, so ill get the rest of it up by the end of the night Kyle Zwicker Mrs. Cristo Rhetoric and Research Period 2 13, April 2009 Lincoln Douglas Debate “Although modesty is natural to man, it is not natural to children. Modesty only begins with the knowledge of evil.” – Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In today’s society around the world, television, movies, radio and internet are all corrupt with images, terms and general knowledge that is either inappropriate for minors, or morally wrong for general public. Of that list of media, the internet is the one that contains the most inappropriate information. The reason for this is that all other forms of media are censored by the government while the internet is not. Because of this, minors and people with strong morals or values against inappropriate information are left open to accidentally come across this information. While this has been a threat since the internet’s creation, it is now more of a problem than ever with the popularity of the computer and ease of internet access. Therefore I strongly affirm the resolution statement that government limitations of internet content are justified. Altruism, the unselfish concern for the welfare of others, is a widely accepted and practiced value of today’s society. A good example of altruism is the St. Baldricks fundraiser at McHenry West Campus High School. The students as a whole banded together for the unselfish concern of Jackson Grabo and gave it their all to raise as much as they could for him. The same value can be applied to the internet censorship situation. Courtesy, civility, or the consideration for others, is another widely accepted and practiced value. Courtesy is considered common place in today’s society and is generally practiced on the internet except for the inappropriate information openly displayed. It would only be common courtesy to censor that information. To allow for a clear understanding of my resolution, let me first define some terms which can be found at Dictionary.com. Government is the political direction and control exercised over the actions of the members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states; direction of the affairs of a state, community, etc. Limitation is a restriction. Internet is a vast computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide. The Internet includes commercial, educational, governmental, and other networks, all of which use the same set of communications protocols. Content is something that is to be expressed through some medium, as speech, writing, or any of various arts. Justified is to show to be just or right. My first contention concerns radio and television censorship. The Federal Communications Commission has been controlling radio broadcasts since it was first created back in 1927 as found on the FCC website. It has since gained the ability to censor radio broadcasts and television broadcasts. The FCC can fine these broadcasting companies almost thirty thousand dollars for each violation of rules. A recent violation is the “Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction” at the superbowl. The same laws here can be easily applied to the internet and its content. My second contention concerns the internet and how it is “naturally” regulated. In February 1996, the Communications Decency Act, or CDA, was enacted. It was congress’ first attempt to censor speech online. In the same month it was restrained from enforcement as a result from a Supreme Court ruling that it was unconstitutional and violated the first amendment. Today’s internet contains blogs and fourms where any individual can go to post his or her ideas. Nearly all of these blogs and fourms have some sort of moderation system where volunteers courteously read each idea and make sure it is appropriate for the particular site. Jean-Jacques Rousseau believed that man is born naturally innocent, but is corrupted as they interact with others. The internet is the perfect device provided for that corruption to happen, and the only way to prevent that corruption is to censor the information displayed. It should not be too much to ask for what is currently being done, just on a larger scale. In conclusion, to prevent corruption, the internet, that largest information source known to man, needs to be censored by the government. This might be considered a violation of the first amendment, but radio and television broadcasts are currently being censored by government organizations which can be argued as a violation of the first amendment. The internet already has its own natural censoring system; it cannot be too much to ask for a more refined, by law system enforced by the government. That is why I urge you to vote for the affirmative. Question Tree: | |

| It looks well done, I disagree with it of course but you've done a decent job of representing the pro limit side. If by some chance you read this before the debate try to steer your opponent away from the idea of who decides what should be censored...he could stumble into the point that since the government is the people, then flawed people (corrupted as Rousseau argued) run the government and that would lead to corrupted decisions. Also they would tend to be opposed to anything that makes them look bad. If you can keep him off balance long enough that he doesn't hit those points you should be ok. But since you probably wont see this in time I'll just say good luck, I hope you do (did?) well, and the paper looks well written. | |

| Yeah, good luck. It can actually be moe fun arguing for something you don't agree with. Since it's a she you could be mean about it and get one of your friends to ask another person something like "what's that thing on her face?" And then pretend she wasn't supposed to hear it. Then you just keep looking at her funny as she talks. OK, don't do that. It was a joke...it would probably work, but it'd be mean. | |

| i'm back in vermonter land after a delayed flight so i didn't get back home till 1 30 am and then got up at 8 (cuz i couldn't sleep), while in floridia i got to go to a legit hobby shop, hobby town usa, it was pretty cool to see a lot of RC up close cuz i've only really got to see a revo 3.3 and a rusty... so i got to check out a bunch more, it was pretty cool, i gotta say those 5T's are SICk totally awsome, the LST2 is also a really cool truck for sure up close, and those shocks are HUGE!!!!!!!! (but need another 1.5in to be called beastly), i got to hold an e-firestorm, (well the box that it was in... but still) also 1/8 buggies always surprise me with thier size... always... and those rc18's are SMALL and the micro T/DT are REALLY small, i wanted to get a mirco DT but it would've been a PITA to fit in our lugage... (so i may get it online (so much for supporting my LHS well its in floida but still) but i think i'm gunna save for a mini e-revo), uhh yeah so thats my vaction... also florida institute of tech. good school, if anyone is looking at it... but KNOW what you want to do when you APPLY,

| What do you plan on going for Lug? I've been looking at a lot of tech schools for automotive. So far I'm considering wyotech and New England Tech. I'm really into automotive but never had the chance to expirence it becuase my parents think that I don't have the tools to do the work. I've also considered some engineering(but it seems pretty boring) | |

mech. is really the only type that interests me... that or ocean... cuz i like water and such and that seems like it'd be a fun field but, i like mech. more... civil is with buildings and bridges cool but... it doesn't float my boat, chemical is a lot of chemestry designing new materials and such... that doesn't sound too fun to me, uhh what else is there... electrical, thats circuty that also sounds like it could be a PITA, mech. seems like the best for me...
